5 AI certifications worth having on your resume in 2026 🎓
From beginner-friendly to properly technical.
Companies are hiring people who can actually put AI to work, not just talk about it. A certification is one of the simplest ways to show that on paper. These five run from "finish it in a weekend" to "build your own chatbot", so pick the one that matches where you are.
| Certification | Best for | Commitment |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Certified Architect | Developers & consultants building on Claude | Partner-only exam for now — Claude Academy is the free route |
| GitHub Foundations | Starting a tech career, using AI coding tools | Entry-level exam |
| Google AI Essentials | Non-technical professionals | Under 10 hours, Coursera subscription |
| AWS Certified AI Practitioner | IT, cloud and product roles | Conceptual — no coding |
| IBM Generative AI Engineering | People who want to build AI apps | Multi-course Professional Certificate |
1. Claude Certified Architect 🏛️
Anthropic's official certification, delivered through Pearson VUE. It's aimed at people who implement Claude inside a business: designing solutions, not just chatting with the model.
- Who it's for: developers, consultants and solution architects who build on Claude for clients or their own company.
- Important: this exam is currently open to Anthropic partner companies only. If you're not at a partner, you can't sit it yet.
- Free alternative open to everyone: academy.claude.com — Anthropic's own learning hub. Free courses on Claude, prompting, the API and building with Claude. This is where I'd start regardless, because it's the same material the architect track builds on.
2. GitHub Foundations 🐙
Git and GitHub are how code gets managed and shared in almost every tech team. This certification proves you understand repositories, branches, pull requests, collaboration and the basics of working on real projects.
- Who it's for: anyone moving into tech, or anyone using AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) who needs to understand what's happening under the hood. If you vibe-code but have never made a commit, start here.
- Why it's on an AI list: every AI coding tool outputs code. GitHub is where that code lives. You'll hit a wall fast without it.
3. Google AI Essentials 🔧
Google's beginner course on Coursera. Covers how to use AI tools at work, how to write better prompts, and how to be more productive with AI day-to-day.
- Who it's for: non-technical professionals. Marketers, ops, admin, managers — anyone who wants to use AI properly without learning to code.
- Time and cost: finishable in under 10 hours. Runs on a Coursera subscription, around US$49/month in the US (check the page for your region's pricing).
4. AWS Certified AI Practitioner ☁️
Amazon's official AI certification. Covers AI, machine learning and generative AI concepts, and how they run on the cloud (AWS specifically).
- Who it's for: people who want to show employers they understand how AI works at the infrastructure level: where models run, how they're deployed, what the cloud pieces are. Good for IT, cloud and product roles.
- What it isn't: a coding certification. It's conceptual, so you don't need to be a developer.
5. IBM Generative AI Engineering Professional Certificate 🤖
The most technical one on this list. You learn to build AI applications, work with large language models, and build your own AI-powered chatbot by the end.
- Who it's for: people who want to build, not just use. Some programming comfort (Python) helps a lot.
- Format: a multi-course Professional Certificate on Coursera, so it's a longer commitment than the others.
Which one should you start with? 🧭
- Zero technical background, want to use AI at work: Google AI Essentials (#3)
- Starting a tech career or using AI coding tools: GitHub Foundations (#2)
- Want to understand AI infrastructure for cloud/IT roles: AWS AI Practitioner (#4)
- Want to build AI apps and chatbots: IBM Generative AI Engineering (#5)
- Build on Claude for a living: Claude Academy now (free), Claude Certified Architect when it opens to you (#1)
Rules I'd follow 🔑
- Don't collect certificates. Pick one that matches the job you want, finish it, put it on LinkedIn, then decide if you need another.
- Pair it with a project. A certificate plus one thing you actually built beats three certificates alone.
- Check pricing for your country before starting. Coursera pricing varies by region, and the exam fees for AWS and GitHub are separate from any course.
- Start with the free stuff. Claude Academy is free. Many Coursera courses let you audit the content free; you pay for the certificate.
