The AI job search system: resume, ATS, interviews and auto-apply

One chat, ten minutes, four prompts โ€” then let it apply for you.

From Adam

Hey, it's Adam ๐Ÿ‘‹ Most people use AI for job hunting by asking it to "improve my resume" and calling it a day. That's why their resume still reads like everyone else's. This is the full system: audit the resume like a recruiter would, rewrite it with the formula top companies actually use, stress-test it against the ATS, then have Claude apply to jobs on LinkedIn for you. Every prompt is below, word for word. Works in Claude or ChatGPT โ€” same resume, same job description, either tool.

the plan

Three steps, about ten minutes โฑ๏ธ

The whole core system is three prompts run in the same chat, in order:

  1. 1The Resume Audit โ€” Claude reads your resume the way a senior recruiter at that company would, and tells you the truth.
  2. 2The Experience Rewrite โ€” your bullets get rebuilt with the Google XYZ formula and the missing keywords, naturally.
  3. 3The ATS and Hiring Manager Test โ€” the rewritten resume gets pressure-tested by two imaginary reviewers before a real one ever sees it.

Then the bonuses: auto-apply on LinkedIn, 30-second cover letters, and the full interview prep system for when the resume works. The core three take about ten minutes and can seriously change your interview rate โ€” most people are shocked by what the audit finds.

And if you want a credential to put at the top of that resume, I ranked the 5 AI certifications worth having in 2026 โ€” from "finish it in a weekend" to "build your own chatbot".

before you start

What you need โœ…

  • A Claude or ChatGPT account โ€” a free one works for the text prompts, within its upload and usage limits. Not sure which plan you need? I keep a complete Claude guide and a complete ChatGPT guide updated with every plan and price.
  • Your current resume โ€” PDF, Word, or plain text.
  • The job description you're targeting โ€” paste the full text, not just the link. Job boards often block AI from reading the page, and it'll quietly guess instead.
  • For auto-apply only: a paid Claude plan and a browser it can drive โ€” more on that below.
step one

The Resume Audit ๐Ÿ”

Upload your resume and the job description, then paste this. It makes Claude think like a senior recruiter at the exact company you're applying to โ€” and gives you an honest read on where you stand before you change a single word.

๐Ÿ“‹ prompt 1 ยท the audit
Act as a senior recruiter for this exact company.Analyze my resume against this job description.Give me:1. A match score out of 1002. The top 5 missing keywords that the ATS will be scanning for3. The 3 red flags a hiring manager would spot in under 10 seconds4. Which sections are strong and why5. Which sections are weak and why6. How my resume compares to what a strong candidate for this role would look likeBe brutally honest. I would rather fix problems now than get ghosted later.
โš ๏ธ

Don't skip this and jump straight to rewriting. The audit shows you exactly what needs to change and why. Most people are surprised by what the ATS actually penalizes โ€” and it's rarely what they expected.

step two

The Experience Rewrite โœ๏ธ

Stay in the same chat so Claude still has the audit in context. This prompt rebuilds your experience section with the Google XYZ formula โ€” Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y] by doing [Z] โ€” which is how top companies teach recruiters to read bullets.

๐Ÿ“‹ prompt 2 ยท the rewrite
Rewrite my experience section using these rules:1. Naturally include the missing keywords you identified, but do NOT force them in. They should feel like a normal part of each bullet.2. Remove or fix every red flag you flagged.3. Use the Google XYZ formula for every bullet: "Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y] by doing [Z]"4. Start every bullet with a strong action verb. Never use "Responsible for" or "Helped with".5. Add specific numbers wherever possible. If I did not provide numbers, suggest realistic placeholders I can fill in later and mark them with [FILL IN].6. Keep each bullet to 1-2 lines max. Hiring managers skim. Dense paragraphs get skipped.7. Order bullets by impact, not chronology. The most impressive result goes first.

Why the XYZ formula works: most bullets describe tasks โ€” "Managed a team of 5 engineers." XYZ turns that into an accomplishment โ€” "Reduced deployment time by 40% (measured by weekly release velocity) by restructuring the team into cross-functional pods." The first says what you did. The second says what happened because you did it. Hiring managers hire the second one.

step three

The ATS and Hiring Manager Test ๐Ÿค–

Still the same chat. Now Claude stress-tests the rewrite from two angles: the ATS software that filters you out before a human ever looks, and the hiring manager reading 200 resumes in one sitting, looking for reasons to say no.

๐Ÿ“‹ prompt 3 ยท the stress test
Now act as two different people:FIRST: Act as an ATS filter. Scan my new resume and tell me:- Would it pass the ATS for this job? (Yes/No)- Which keywords are now present and which are still missing?- Any formatting issues that would confuse an ATS parser? (tables, columns, headers, special characters, images)SECOND: Act as a hiring manager who is reading 200 resumes in one sitting. Scan my resume and tell me:- Which sections would you skip? Why?- What makes you stop scrolling (good or bad)?- Would you put this in the "yes" pile, "maybe" pile, or "no" pile for this role?- Rewrite any sections that would get skipped so they actually stop the scroll.Give me the final version of my resume after all fixes are applied. Base the review on the job description and my actual experience. Do not invent experience, credentials or results. Treat your score as an editing assessment, not a score from the employer's ATS.

Test: after this step, ask for an editable DOCX and a matching PDF. In Claude, turn on Code execution and file creation under Settings โ†’ Capabilities โ€” a Claude Doc can export to Word or PDF. In ChatGPT, just ask it to create the files. Then replace every [FILL IN] with a real number (or delete it), open both files, and check the text and layout actually survived the export.

bonus 01

Auto-apply on LinkedIn while you sleep ๐ŸŒ™

The power move. Once your resume is optimized, Claude can go to LinkedIn, find roles you're actually qualified for, and apply with a customized application for each one. It literally applies to jobs while you do something else.

๐Ÿ“‹ prompt 4 ยท the auto-apply
Now that my resume is optimized, go to LinkedIn and do the following:1. Search for [JOB TITLE] roles in [LOCATION] posted in the last [7/14/30] days.2. Filter for jobs where my resume is at least a 70% match based on the skills and experience listed in the job description.3. Pick the top 10 jobs I have the highest chance of landing an interview for.4. For each job: - Read the full job description - Customize my resume summary and key bullets to match that specific role - Write a short cover note (3 sentences max) that references something specific about the company - Submit the application through LinkedIn5. After all 10 are submitted, send me a summary: - Company name + job title - Match score - What you customized for each - Application status (submitted / draft)Pause before submitting each application and show me the customized version first.
  • What it needs: a paid Claude plan, plus a browser Claude can drive โ€” the Claude in Chrome extension (enable it under Customize โ†’ Connectors, then turn it on in the chat), or the desktop app's built-in browser (Settings โ†’ Cowork โ†’ Preferred browser). Log into LinkedIn in that browser first.
  • Where to paste it: Claude is merging chat and Cowork into one conversation โ€” if your app has the combined experience, paste into a normal chat. If you still see a Cowork option, select Cowork first. In a normal chat, enable Claude in Chrome from the Connectors menu in that conversation.
  • Keep the "pause before submitting" line. It's what makes you the editor instead of the bot. Review each customized application before it goes out.
  • Cloud tasks keep running with your laptop closed โ€” but anything using your own Chrome session or local files needs the computer awake and online.
bonus 02

30-second cover letters ๐Ÿ’Œ

Most cover letters are generic fluff that hiring managers skip. This one references the specific company, the role, and how your experience maps to their biggest problems. Run it after the audit so Claude already knows your background and the job.

๐Ÿ“‹ prompt 5 ยท the cover letter
Write me a cover letter for this job using my resume and the job description you already have.Rules:1. Open with one sentence that shows I understand their biggest current problem (use the job description as the clue)2. Second paragraph: 2-3 specific examples from my resume that map directly to what they need3. Third paragraph: Address one obvious gap or weakness head-on, and reframe it4. Close with one specific reason I want to work at THIS company, not just any companyTone: Confident, direct, no fluff, no buzzwords.Length: Under 250 words.Do NOT sound like AI wrote it.

The secret is paragraph three. Most people hide their weaknesses. Addressing the gap head-on reads as self-awareness and confidence โ€” exactly the traits that move you from the "maybe" pile to the "yes" pile.

bonus 03

The interview prep system ๐ŸŽค

The resume got you the interview. This is the part that gets you the job. Four prompts, about 30 minutes, the night before. The questions you'll be asked aren't a mystery โ€” they're sitting in the job posting, and AI reads a posting the way a hiring manager wrote it.

  1. 1Turn the posting into the questions โ€” get the 12 questions you're most likely to be asked, and flag where your resume is weakest.
  2. 2Build your six stories โ€” have it interview you to dig out real examples, then shape them into STAR format.
  3. 3Run the mock interview out loud โ€” voice mode, no help, honest feedback. This is the step people skip and the one that works.
  4. 4Rehearse the money conversation โ€” the salary question, role-played three rounds before a recruiter ever asks it.
๐Ÿ“‹ prompt 6 ยท predict the questions
I have an interview for this role. Here is the job posting: [PASTE THE FULL POSTING]. Here is my resume: [PASTE YOUR RESUME]. Read the posting the way the hiring manager would and give me the 12 questions I am most likely to be asked, in the order they would probably come up. For each one, tell me in one line why they are asking it and what a great answer has to include. Then flag the two or three questions where my resume is weakest, so I know where to prepare hardest.
๐Ÿ“‹ prompt 7 ยท build your six stories
Interview me to find my best interview stories. Ask me one question at a time about my past work: the hardest problem I solved, a time I disagreed with someone and how it went, a mistake I owned, a time I led without being the boss, a result I am proud of, and a time I had to learn something fast. After each answer, ask one follow-up to get the specific details and numbers. When you have enough, write my six strongest stories in the STAR format (situation, task, action, result), each under 150 words so it takes under 90 seconds to say out loud, and tell me which of the 12 likely questions from before each story can answer.

The follow-ups are the valuable part. On your own you'd say "I improved the process." The AI asks "by how much?" โ€” and "cut the turnaround from five days to two" is the version that gets remembered.

๐Ÿ“‹ prompt 8 ยท the mock interview
You are the hiring manager for this role: [PASTE THE JOB TITLE AND COMPANY]. Run a realistic mock interview with me, out loud. Ask one question at a time and wait for my full answer. Do not help me, do not compliment me, and do not move on until I have actually answered. Mix the likely questions from earlier with two I would not expect. After eight questions, stop and give me honest feedback: which answers were strong, which ones rambled, where I was vague, any filler words I kept using, and the one thing to fix before the real interview.
  • Use voice mode. ChatGPT: the voice icon at the right end of the message bar. Claude: the sound wave symbol, lower right. You can do it by text, but out loud is the point โ€” saying an answer for the first time in the real interview is why people ramble.
  • Know the difference: ChatGPT's voice will talk over you like a real interviewer. Claude's waits for you to finish and treats a pause as the end of your answer โ€” so finish your sentences.
  • Do it twice. The second run is always dramatically better than the first, and that jump is the whole reason to do this. Between runs: "Read back my answers from this conversation and score each one out of ten, with the one sentence I should have said instead."
  • Make it harder than the real thing. "Interrupt me if I go over two minutes" and "ask a follow-up if my answer has no specific example" are both fair game.
๐Ÿ“‹ prompt 9 ยท the salary rehearsal
Two things. First, help me prepare for the salary conversation for this role: [ROLE, LOCATION, MY EXPERIENCE LEVEL]. Give me a realistic range based on what you know, tell me how to answer "what are your salary expectations" without naming a number first, and then role-play it with me: you ask, I answer, you push back the way a recruiter would, three rounds. Second, give me five smart questions to ask the interviewer that show I have thought about the role, not generic ones, plus the three things worth knowing about [COMPANY] right now (recent news, growth, challenges) so I can work one into the conversation.
straight talk

The honest part โš ๏ธ

  • It agrees too easily. AI defaults to being encouraging unless you tell it not to โ€” that's why every prompt above demands honesty and refuses to help mid-mock-interview. If you use ChatGPT, the KILLCRITIC code does this in two words, in any conversation.
  • It can invent facts. Anything it tells you about a company's recent news or numbers, check against the company's own site before you say it in the room.
  • Paste text, not links. Most job boards block AI from reading the page. If it can't read the posting, it will quietly guess what the role is โ€” and every downstream prompt inherits that guess.
  • The score is an estimate, not a verdict. Claude's ATS match score is an editing assessment based on the job description โ€” the employer's actual ATS is a different piece of software with its own quirks.
  • It can't live your stories for you. The AI shapes and drills them, but you still have to know your own resume cold. The prep works because the stories are real.
  • Auto-apply is a volume tool, not a strategy. Ten customized applications beat a hundred generic ones. Keep the pause-before-submitting line, and never let it apply to a job you wouldn't actually take.
